The Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR)
Briefing paper
This publication explores the role of ecosystems and the environment in the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and proposes a range of actions focused on integrated environmental and natural resource management approaches to disaster risk reduction, such as:
assessing disaster risks, vulnerability, capacity, exposure, hazard characteristics and their possible sequential effects on ecosystems at the relevant socila and spatial scale;
mainstreaning disaster risk assessments, mapping and management into rural development planning and management of various ecosystems;
integrating DRR in global, regional and national policies related to environment, natural resource management and biodiversity.
The publication also highlights key issues that require further attention:
the need for mainstreaming Eco-Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)/Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) as part of risk-informed, sustainable development;
the promotion of Eco-DRR/CCA in disaster preparedness, response, recovery and reconstruction;
increased attention for integrated water and wetland management to reduce disaster risk;
the need for all-of-society engagement, with emphasis on community participation;
tracking progress on local, national and global environment efforts to reduce risks
